Between Athens and Ankara

Greece is known for being a country with different ethnicities and cultures. Some are better known than others, some are not known at all. One of these unknown minorities lives in West-Thrace, in the North of the country.

The region is bordered by Bulgaria on the northside, the sea to the southern side and Turkey to the East. This minority is, in the rare cases they are acknowledged, referred to as the muslim minority ‘Azinlik’.

And though most people there are muslim, they are split between three ethnic groups: the Roma, the (Bulgarian) Pomak and the Turks.

It’s this Turkish-Muslim minority that wants ethnical and cultural recognition for their identity. In the short documentary ‘Between Athens and Ankara’, several members and representatives talk about their identity and the struggles it brings.
