The far-right faction was initially completely isolated, but it appears that over time, it is becoming increasingly involved in parliamentary work and playing a more important role there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-767a24573e45d56313bad8718d34545f wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Kamil\u00e9 Vaiciukevi\u010di\u016bt\u0117 and Freya Bjerrum<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"humamaudio\" style=\"position:relative;overflow:hidden;width:600px;height:40px;margin:20px 0px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"40\" src=\"https:\/\/stream.hu.nl\/players\/uooqqDZy-gUDjC9bv.html\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e4e7482f2f4fefc7300b34dcb633affc wp-block-paragraph\">To this day, the <em>cordon sanitaire<\/em> is applied to Patriots for Europe, and other political groups still, at least officially, support this stance. \u201cI myself remember that more than once we simply voted against when Patriots for Europe tried to put forward their candidates at the very initial stages,\u201d says the member of Renew Europe Group, Dainius \u017dalimas. According to him, it is impossible to completely isolate this far-right party from power and decision-making, as the largest group in the European Parliament, the European People\u2019s Party (EPP), makes exceptions and sometimes cooperates with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6e2832fb00da2dd46787a6f39415e642 wp-block-paragraph\">With the existing right-wing majority in the Parliament, Patriots for Europe itself feels the shifting stance of the European People\u2019s Party. \u201cWe\u2019re still excluded from formal positions. We don\u2019t hold the vice-presidencies or committee chairmanships that our size would normally entitle us to, but in real political terms, things have changed, because EPP no longer depends on Renew Europe Group and therefore faces internal pressure to use the right-wing majority when there\u2019s broad agreement,\u201d comments Anders Vistisen. According to him, with the growing EPP\u2019s willingness to cooperate with Patriots for Europe, the <em>cordon sanitaire <\/em>does not hold on in practice anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-473b87bc8cb0160308af333e808a8b62 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Everything is in the EPP\u2019s hands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e5ea1a699ea1853d25d077b2acacb44a wp-block-paragraph\">According to a Policy Analyst at the European Policy Centre, Eric Maurice, centre-right parties like EPP are sometimes willing to accept votes from the far-right when it is helpful, even if the group won\u2019t formally support their proposals. \u201cFor instance, the EPP might receive support from Patriots for Europe on deregulation or simplification, especially when it relates to climate and Green Deal legislation. But the EPP wouldn\u2019t vote for texts proposed by the far-right, as seen in the motion of censure against Ursula von der Leyen. They shared some concerns but still didn\u2019t support the motion,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ce74e7d9db0ce171dbd804e9e842156e wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey can say, &#8216;either you compromise, or we\u2019ll find a majority with Patriots for Europe.\u2019 That dynamic gives the far-right influence, even without being in the governing coalition,\u201d &#8211; Eric Maurice<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d80cf0f05a036e410509e8e26d1d8477 wp-block-paragraph\">The policy analyst also notices that the EPP uses the threat of cooperation with the far right as leverage over its centrist partners, Renew Europe Group and the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. \u201cThey can say, &#8216;either you compromise, or we\u2019ll find a majority with Patriots for Europe.\u2019 That dynamic gives the far-right influence, even without being in the governing coalition,\u201d explains E. Maurice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ff7193457a025b299350475adc6cc5e3 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indirect influence is growing&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f3f787c74da2351a65dabe35b16fbb93 wp-block-paragraph\">Cooperation between different political groups not only happens in plenary sessions, but also on a procedural level, such as agenda forming. And here the Patriots for Europe become more influential. \u201cOther parties position themselves in relation to us. We\u2019ve had significant growth, and that has clearly shaped which issues are given prominence. Migration policy is one example,\u201d says A. This means Patriots for Europe and other far-right groups can influence the tone and wording of legislation indirectly,\u201d explains E. Maurice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-29a9c8cf7790414efe287b6648834e29 wp-block-paragraph\">He also adds that groups like Patriots for Europe can request debates in plenary. \u201cThe framing of such debates matters. A migration debate led by Patriots for Europe starts from a completely different narrative than the one introduced by Socialists and Democrats. So, they are increasingly shaping not just policies but also the language and framing of European Union political debate,\u201d says the Policy Analyst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-729e74ccb87cdbca0eb983359cec6a90 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The treatment is still different&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-16a3750de90a13b53e805466fde1ec0a wp-block-paragraph\">Despite gaining more influence in the European Parliament, the members of Patriots for Europe still feel like they are treated differently from other political groups. \u201cThere\u2019s clear institutional bias. The administration itself doesn\u2019t particularly like having right-wing parties represented, and that\u2019s reflected in unequal treatment,\u201d comments A. Vistisen. According to him, it is even seen in plenary sessions: \u201cIf I go a few seconds over my speaking time, my microphone is cut off immediately, while pro-European colleagues can speak 20 or 30 seconds longer without interruption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0893491c332b7049cff383878b06eae2 wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Lithuanian correspondent in Brussels, Evaldas Labanauskas, says that he hasn\u2019t noticed different treatment of Patriots for Europe in plenary meetings. \u201cAlmost everybody is cut off. It really depends on who the speaker is at the moment; some of them are strict, some are not. So some of them are letting the politicians finish the sentence, some are just cutting them off,\u201d argues the journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8067ce4c45a95c4f04c31ddd8c277a92 wp-block-paragraph\">The Renew Europe member D. \u017dalimas also adds that while working with the Patriots for Europe as a whole is not possible, they can collaborate with individuals from this group just fine. \u201cIn the Legal Affairs Committee, for example, we have a representative of their faction, and she is quite a good lawyer. Sometimes she expresses completely rational legal arguments that are hard to argue against,\u201d he explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-01afa7ecece2f6455055fc371346b5a1 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The future of the Patriots for Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-29d0e8b3bd8642ec2043be94262b2430 wp-block-paragraph\">In E. Maurice&#8217;s opinion, this far-right group will hold as long as they stay in opposition. \u201cOpposition is easy. You can just say no to things you dislike and support what you like. But they lack what I\u2019d call inter-institutional strength. The EPP, for instance, is strong in the Parliament, the Commission, and the European Council, which gives them a lot of leverage. Patriots don\u2019t have that,\u201d he comments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-2b9dae0f64fb439fd27453327066945c wp-block-paragraph\">If Patriots for Europe gain more positions, it will show how flexible the cooperation between them and EPP has become,\u201d &#8211; Eric Maurice<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-be09842b23dfef889f26b6bb47ba12cb wp-block-paragraph\">Even though this far-right group is better organized than the ones that came before, according to the Policy Analyst, they lack the institutional culture and experience to connect their influence across different bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-720b89e79ff46bfbc7c0b83a9f474788 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAn interesting upcoming test will be the midterm renewal of committee chairs and vice-presidencies. If Patriots for Europe gain more positions, it will show how flexible the cooperation between them and EPP has become,\u201d adds E.
