Bell casting has been important in the Netherlands for centuries, and the country is still famous for its bells today. During wars, many bells were melted down, and in World War II, the Dutch couldn\u2019t hear them for five years.<\/p>\n

In Utrecht, however, people managed to save most of the old bells. Today, these bells are more than instruments\u2014they are symbols of freedom, a connection to history, and a journey through time.<\/p>\n

In this audio, you will hear Wouter Iseger, author of Silent Towers<\/em>, a book about bells. The bells of the Dom Tower each have their own names. For example, one of the most famous bells, Maria, had a strong spiritual and symbolic role.<\/p>\n
