The indie film scene in Berlin has always been one which allowed artists to explore the art of cinema, and experiment with different themes, visions and techniques. However, much like in mainstream cinema it has been dominated by directors from less diverse backgrounds. In recent years this has began to change, with directors from more diverse backgrounds finally getting the recognition they deserve. One key factor in this shift has been that small cinemas (kinos) in the city have been giving opportunities for these artists to screen their films to local audiences.
