DOCU: United by their past, but divided in the present – The story of the two CSKA`s

CSKA Sofia is the biggest and most decorated club in Bulgaria, with a rich history since its foundation in 1948. 31 league titles, 21 cup titles and many more.

But the last chapters of CSKA’s history mainly consist of black pages. Financial mismanagement caused the club to go bankrupt in 2016. Which made Bulgaria saw its most successful team disappear from the football scene.

Nevertheless, the CSKA boss found a way out. He merged his old club (which had also been dissolved) with another club, changed the name of the club to CSKA. Et voilà, CSKA exists again and is back in the first division. Although this did raise the discussion whether this was still the real CSKA.

Fans of the opponents did not think this was the right way to re-found your club. But so did some CSKA fans. They founded their own version of the club which started from the lowest division: CSKA 1948.

Four seasons later and Bulgarian football has this unique situation where two clubs, with the same name, from the same city and originally from the same club are now both playing in the first division of Bulgarian football. Fans from both clubs argue that they are the real CSKA, although it could be argued if the real CSKA still exist.
