Fighting stereotypes with a game: Asian Raisins is up for the challenge

Yet another blow strikes the Chinese community, as the Amsterdam Court of Appeal declares that Radio 10 DJ Lex Gaarthuis will not be prosecuted for his song Prevention is Better than Chinese. Among many others, organisation Asian Raisins was at the frontline of a petition signed to condemn the song as discriminatory. Rui Jun Luong, graphic designer and founder of Asian Raisins shared her disappointment about the news.

The Asian community in the Netherlands witnesses a renewed wave of hatred due to its alleged affiliation with the Coronavirus. But the history of racism against Asians finds its roots long before the outbreak of the pandemic. Rui Jun retraces her difficult journey through discrimination in school as a Dutch citizen with Chinese origins.

Rui Jun Luong decided to tackle prejudices and misrepresentation with a game: Guess Who, Asian Edition. She gave a new face and a voice to the members of the Asian community as a counterpoint to the stereotypes dominating the Dutch media.
